At least 14 people were killed in a shootout at a movie premiere Batman in the U.S. city of Denver, police said.
About 50 people were injured in the incident cinema complex in suburban Aurora.
Witnesses say a gunman wearing a gas mask opened fire at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises.
A 24 year old man was arrested in a nearby car park in possession of a rifle and handguns. He told police that the explosives were stored at his home.
Police Chief Dan Oates told reporters that the building in northern Aurora were evacuated as a result of this information.
More weapons may have been left in the film, he said.
"No terrorist link '
The incident at the Century 16 theater complex began at about 0:30 local time (0630 GMT).
"Witnesses told us that he published a kind of cartridge. They heard a hissing sound and some of the gas have emerged and the gunman opened fire, "said the chief of police.
An eyewitness said the man was dressed all in black wearing a riot helmet, flak jacket and goggles
"The shooting apparently took some time," he said.
Ten people were killed in the cinema and four others died later in hospital from their injuries, he said.
The FBI, working with the police, for example, no terrorism link has been established.
Many ambulances were on the scene. Officials from the Swedish Medical Center, not the area's main hospital, told the BBC the facility had received several gunshot wounds and was expecting more.
A witness said a man in body armor and riot helmets had been "slowly made its way down the stairs and just shooting - picking random people."
A witness told the BBC that about 30 or 40 minutes into the movie a man came into the side lane closest to the first row.
"I am sure that the port [a] mask He fired a cartridge into the air -. It could be a smoke bomb or tear gas," the woman, identified only as Pam, told the BBC.
"He turned right into the air, then I started hearing the bang, bang, bang of a gun.
"I crawled my way through the line, fortunately output was close to where I was sitting so I went out fast enough. I heard more shots as I left, "she said.
Another eyewitness, Salina Jordan, 19, told the Denver Post, she saw a girl shot in the cheek, and a girl who seemed to be about nine years with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
A witness told 9News theater nearby when he heard shots and lots of smoke and initially thought they were live special effects created by the cinema.
