Emmy nominations 2012: Surprises include ‘Girls’ and Betty White

The 2012 Emmy nominations are in, with "Mad Men" leading the pack - but its 17 nods to lead to a new record? TV critic Lisa DeMoraes think: She wrote that the show is about to make history:

"Mad Men" won this particular group of four consecutive years, it is now tied with "Hill Street Blues", "LA Law" and "The West Wing" for the most wins in this category. If "Mad Men" take the trophy again in the night of Emmy in September, it would set a record for most wins by a dramatic series "Mad Men" domination was no surprise critics and viewers, even if - . The momentum should continue to warm, like many other acclaimed performances frequently. Among them:

• "Downton Abbey" earned nominations for many of its cast members, and for art direction, casting, costumes, directing, editing, hair, musical score, mixing and writing. Jen Chaney Celebritology imagined how the cast was celebrating its 16 nominations:

"Anna and Mr Bates' Downton Abbey," also known as Joanne Froggatt and actors Brendan Coyle, finally got some well deserved good news this morning: They were nominated for the Emmy Awards. I like to imagine they commemorated the classic moment Anna / Mr. Bates method: making adorable faces Demure to another, and celebrate their love with a chaste kiss, but deeply satisfying.

"Downton" also made the transition from the mini-series full of drama this year, placing it amid increased competition - it is against DeMoraes Wrote "Mad Men".: "It may be a small consolation for 'Downton "and PBS, but the elegant soap is considered by many to have the best chance of reversing the" Mad Men. "

• "History of the American horror 'decision to file in the miniseries category paid, tying with the show" Mad Men "with 17 nominations. He nods for best miniseries won, Best Actress ( Connie Britton), supporting actress (Jessica Lange and Frances Conroy) and categories editing techniques, makeup, prosthetic makeup, hair, mold, the opening titles, art direction (two in this category) , costumes, sound editing, sound mixing coordination and waterfalls.

Chaney wrote: "Their argument: As the anthology series', one that will restart in season two with all new characters, it could be considered a mini-series and a drama. Emmy bought this argument, which allows "DAD" to participate in a (slightly) less competitive field that the race for best drama. "

• "Breaking Bad" Bryan Cranston is back in the game after missing last year's Emmy Awards because of the show did not have aired during the eligibility period. DeMoraes written: "Cranston won the derby every year, it was permissible" - which does not bode well for the chances of Jon Hamm for an acting award for "Mad Men".

• "Game Change", the dramatization of the 2008 presidential election and the decision of Senator John McCain choose Sarah Palin as his running mate, won nods for Julianne Moore as Palin, and best mini-series.

British Open 2012: Complete Breakdown of Opening Round

British Open 2012: Tiger Posts 3-Under; Adam Scott Leads At 6-Under:

Throughout the week, the course at Royal Lytham has been described as "tough but fair", a test track that would penalize poor readers with more nasty bunkers and the thickest of rough diamonds, but give red numbers to those who found the short grass.

Well, Thursday morning, Lytham proved extremely beautiful ... and about as difficult as last week's John Deere Classic.

The wind and bad weather that characterize golf links was completely absent for those after the first day of the Open, and they took advantage.

16 players finished with rounds under par, and Adam Scott was the man who paved the way. The Australian, who, despite his recent good play, impressive ball-striking ability (a perfect feature to Lytham) and world-class, was somehow overlooked coming into this week. But he tore from Lytham on Thursday.

Scott started slowly with a bogey on three, but then displayed his usual grace from tee to green and recently found his stroke with the putter long (no matter how it may seem uncomfortable). Eight birdies over the next 13 holes followed, and when it reaches the tee 17, was seven under par for the round and one birdie shy of that elusive major championship round of 62.

Scott admitted in his post-round interview that he began thinking about the number at that time, and he made bogey on 18 after a poor drive into gnarly rough, displaying 64 to six strokes below normal instead.

But it was a brilliant round of golf with a man who is now (early, of course) in very good position to capture his long-awaited first major title.
As for the others on the leaderboard, the biggest name in golf product the most enthusiasm from the start.

Tiger Woods, who missed the cut at the Greenbrier Classic two weeks ago, said early on that his game was in great shape primitive.

The World No. 4 opened with a crisp five-iron to 10 feet and a birdie that followed in the first, and continued to roll. A perfectly judged 20-footer fell into the cup for a birdie four, and the difficult par-four sixth, Woods is simple: Fairway, green, and another 20-footer in the dead center for birdie.

When Woods made his eagle chip on the seventh in a foot of the cup, he was four under par and atop the leader board.

Then, as suddenly as Woods stormed into the head, it cools.

September straight pars followed, and he had to strike a blow miraculous third from the state gross thickness of 15 just to escape with a bogey. Three more pars to finish meant to finish three under par after such a hot start.

It was quite a good opening round for Woods, but it could have been much better. The perfect rhythm, it appears on the greens early in the course has given way to a stroke that left to putt after putt short as possible after the missed opportunity.

His ball striking was a guilty and. Woods hit 10 of his last 11 greens, but the remote control was still a problem, and the opportunities he got to were not exactly fantastic. He was also ultra-conservative off the tee, hitting a single pilot and not more than two or three wood all around. These are questions that Woods needs to work if he wants to return to the form he showed during the first seven holes.

As for others, there was a huge surprise on the first day.

This came in the form of Paul Lawrie, who, despite playing well this year, we did not expect to make noise this week.

However, the 1999 Open champion summoned the magic that was Thursday. He chipped in twice for birdie during his first five holes, and when he made a 30 footer from just off the green for par six, he had set up a stretch of four holes that have just need a putt.

Lawrie was three under par, and he dug deeper. He bogeyed eight, but more than three birdies on his last five holes to finish in five and a lead off Scott.

As for big names on the leader board, there were also plenty of other Scott and Woods.

Zach Johnson, coming off a victory at this event low score John Deere Classic, continued his birdie hunting Thursday at Lytham. The Iowan had seven birdies in an opening round five-under-par 65 that left him a lead off Scott.

Ernie Els and Woods Graeme McDowell is three under par 67, as did Bubba Watson, who showed restraint in the use of irons impressive many times off the tee and enough patience to allow it get through the difficult period in his round (during the middle of the back-nine) relatively unscathed.

Among the disappointments were Dustin Johnson (73), Justin Rose (74) and especially Lee Westwood, who birdied his first two holes and began to lose height to five shots to finish at 73.

This is all the big news at the beginning of round 1. Groups in the afternoon have just started the race, and with big names such as McIlroy, Mickelson and Donald just started their tour, much more needs to happen on the first day.

T-storms sweep in, push out heat wave Lightning strikes, heavy hail, power outages hit Shore area

A thunderstorm moving quickly ended a heat wave in three figures, but caused the burning of homes, downed trees and power outages in the counties of Monmouth and northern Ocean late Wednesday afternoon.

"It was a circus - I've never seen anything like this," said Earl Way 92-year-old whose home is near Sandy Hook Bay, Atlantic Highlands. "At 5:25 pm, just blown apart. It was great. He came so fast. The water was three or four feet high. You would not believe."

Bad weather caused more than 1,800 Jersey Central Power & Light customers lost power Wednesday afternoon in Colts Neck, Freehold, Howell, Middletown, Marlboro and the townships of the ocean, and Little Silver, according to the map failure of the company. Between one-half inch and one inch hail was reported in Jackson, Freehold, Middletown and Red Bank, the National Weather Service said. Monmouth County dispatchers reported a substantial number of lightning and fallen trees in roads, particularly in Tinton Falls and Fair Haven.

On Washington Street in Keyport, lightning struck a house, knocking down of gypsum board on a second bathroom floor, police Lt. Anthony Gallo said. "There was really no damage to the exterior of the house," he says. "It was very bizarre. Residents were at home, but nobody was injured. While we were there, lightning struck a house in the street, but we were not able to confirm. Two other homes lost power. " At 5:49 p.m., emergency dispatchers Monmouth County received a 911 call from a female who reported her boyfriend got in trouble in the Raritan Bay in Keyport Yacht Club after his boat overturned, Gallo said.

"It was discovered the call was a hoax," he said, declining to give more information in the early evening Wednesday. Union Police Sgt beach. Timothy Kelly said lightning struck a house on Florence Avenue, from a fire that caused minimal damage and was before the arrival of firefighters. The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a severe thunderstorm watch Wednesday for 16 counties in New Jersey. "Some storms were producing hail and strong winds locally tonight, so this is a concern," meteorologist Kristin Kline of the weather service.

Growing Doubts on Lin’s Return to the Knicks

Five months after being introduced to the world, Jeremy Lin is always inspiring various forms of passion and hysteria. This is not Linsanity we knew in February, when the word was synonymous with joy and wonder, but some horrible mutation of this phenomenon.

In this version, is a franchise Linsanity Knicks voluntarily extinguish the joy. It is a fear frenzied fan base that is raging against another affront, after a decade full of them. If you had told five months ago that the Knicks let Jeremy Lin - their most popular player in a decade - just walk, you would have been called worse than crazy. Yet it seems that the Knicks will. Or they might. As always, their intentions are not entirely clear. And there is more speculation than reality tangible. Several newspapers, citing unnamed sources, reported this weekend that the Knicks intend to let him go to Houston Lin, lower to match a period of three years, $ 25.1 million offer sheet Rockets .
The reason is money. Rockets offers includes a balloon payment of the third year $ 14.98 million. Under the NBA's new luxury tax system that punishes teams that exceed a certain threshold wildly, that the salary could cost the Knicks an additional $ 35 million 45 million of tax payments. While the Knicks were no problems with their payroll during the last decade, even Madison Square Garden has a limit. The contract could be it. A person with knowledge of the deliberations of the Knicks said he was "more likely than not" that the team would be reduced to match the offer. The same person warned, however, that "n ' is not final. " Lin has played brilliantly for most of February.

He electrified the garden and saved the season the Knicks. It is a global marketing machine. But $ 60 million is an extraordinary amount, even in NBA terms, to pass for a player who started only 25 games. Knicks officials were generally silent, and they are under no obligation to say anything to anyone until Tuesday - the deadline to match the offer of Houston. It is unlikely that there will be any clarity until then. (This is a well established tradition for NBA teams to wait until the last minute in these matters.)

The intentions of the Knicks seemed to be telegraphed Saturday night, when they reached an informal agreement to acquire Raymond Felton, a veteran playmaker, Portland. Although Felton could simply be an insurance policy - a hedge against age Jason Kidd (39) and the inexperience of Lin - the movement has been widely interpreted as the first step to sever ties with Lin. Lin said he believed associated Felton was acquired to replace him. However, Lin was not even sure what the Knicks are going to do those associated said. It has been said nothing directly by team officials. And nobody in the hierarchy of the Knicks is talking, leaving fans to speculate and freight. "I'm going for a walk. Perhaps a cliff. I do not know, let's see," Jim Cavan, a Knicks fan and blogger, wrote on his Twitter account Sunday morning

Comments like that were common distraught fans struggling with the news. An online petition calling for the Knicks to keep Lin was already in circulation. There were over 2,000 signatories at midnight on Sunday. The decision was never supposed to be this complicated or stressful. Lin is a restricted free agent, allowing the Knicks to match any offer. He has rights, Early Bird, which give more flexibility to the Knicks pay him, regardless of the salary cap. And due to a dark cap provision, no rival has been authorized to offer Lin pay more than $ 5 million to start. This provision, known as Rule, Gilbert Arenas, was created to ensure that the teams could re-sign as a star Lin escape without fear of being outbid by a team with cap room. The rule is well-meaning with unexpected consequences.

The Rockets can not outbid the Knicks, but because they are under the cap, they are allowed to give a lump sum and Lin - a so-called poison pill - in the third year of his contract. Houston initially set the figure at $ 9.3 million, then it rose to $ 14.98 million, close to the maximum allowed. For purposes of capitalization, Lin three-year salary would be considered average for Houston, or 8.4 million per year. But the Knicks should pay the full amount in 2014-15, which cost $ 50 million $ 60 million a combination of payroll taxes and luxury, the rival leaders said. However, Lin would probably be undervalued in the first two years - to $ 5 million and $ 5.4 million - and the Knicks would be the time to rework their payroll or, ultimately, trade-Lin by the third year, when its term contract would have become a commodity.

These considerations are still weighing the Knicks. Lin would pay the greater of the third Knicks in 2014-15, behind those of Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. It would just over Tyson Chandler, the prevailing defensive player of the year. Even N.B.A. Players who are accustomed to seeing contracts fanciful steal every July, the supply of Lin appeared impressive. Anthony, speaking to reporters covering the U.S. Olympic team, said Sunday that many. "It's not mine," he said. "This is the organization to say they want to match the contract ridiculous." Wages may indeed be ridiculous. But a legion of fans of the Knicks in New York and beyond, the idea of letting the leave is Linsanity Lin pure, and not the good kind.

Dez Bryant arrested after attacking his mother

When the Dallas Cowboys Dez Bryant was drafted in 2010, they gave him No. 88 in the hope that it would be the next team Drew Pearson or Michael Irvin.

Speaking Tuesday on the NFL Network, Irvin, Cowboys Hall of Fame wide receiver, said he was disappointed to learn of the arrest Bryant on Monday to domestic violence. DeSoto Police allege Bryant grabbed his mother, Angela, by his shirt and hair and "hit her in the face with his ball cap" last Saturday.

"To say this is totally outside the realm of possibility, I would not be quite honest," said Irvin. "We know (with) Dez background and upbringing that may have the propensity to make bad decisions. I had that propensity. But to go the distance with her is a bit far. I do not even care not to speak of what the Dallas Cowboys should be done here. I need to know what some lawyers who happens to tell Guy Dez or what he's talking about this issue. You can not - and you heard (Bryant's mother) said she is tired of this, it can not take it. Obviously, it's so sad because it is not the first time and it is certainly something to do there. If we care anything about him, man - forget the football - we must ensure that someone looks at it. "

Irvin, who had a number of off-field incidents in his career and has undergone a five-game suspension to start the 1996 season, said his "heart bleeds" after hearing the 911 call placed by Angela M . Bryant.

"This is uncharted waters. I would like to speak my mind on many things, both the ups and downs, peaks and valleys that I lived, "said Irvin. "But this is outside the world for me. I never laid my hands on a woman, much less talk about the No. 1 woman in the life of every man, to be his mother. You do than trying to think where all this anger and is for you to get to that point. This is why the pressure or stress that you deal, all that is in progress, we can not have that. I know he has to say the same things now. "

Irvin would not discuss whether he felt Bryant was worth it for the Cowboys to keep. In his first two seasons, Bryant has 108 receptions for 1,489 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also returned two punts for touchdowns as a rookie.

"These are all issues of the world for a guy in his first two years with 60-something catches last year in your second year, about 900 meters and two-digit (actually affected nine)," Irvin said. "It's off-the-chart numbers. And all the other stuff was absolutely (the sentence) because it's your debate whether someone sagging pants is really a national history or cultural difference, even if it may have shown poor judgment. But again, this issue is something new. You guys want to talk about football, I want to tell you about the man. I do not like not what the Cowboys think of this situation, I do not want to talk to someone about Dez understand how you get to where your mom beg you to go home and not to hit it. I do not like something else. This is a serious matter that we must get to the bottom. "

But the following year, another senior promoted Google, Jeff Huber, being the senior vice president for local trade, putting him one level above after Ms. Mayer. Although Google characterized the move as a promotion at the time, some wondered if it would be the content of the reorganization.Ms. Mayer, who was first approached about the job in mid-June after returning from a trip to China, resigned from Google on Monday afternoon by telephone. She begins to Yahoo on Tuesday and will also join the board.
In an interview, Ms. Mayer said she "had a great time Google," where she worked for the past 13 years, but ultimately "it was a pretty easy decision" to take the top job at Yahoo . She said Yahoo was "one of the best brands on the Internet." She recalled that when she started to Google, the company would conduct surveys and "people do not understand the difference between Yahoo and the Internet."
As she presents the strategy of Yahoo hashes, Ms. Mayer said she wanted to focus on strong franchises of the company Internet, including e-mail, finance and sports. It also hopes to do more with their broadband video and mobile activities, drawing on its large base of users.
For Yahoo, the hope is that Ms. Mayer and her discerning eye will provide a direction more than necessary for what has been, recently, a rudderless ship.
"Yahoo has finally someone with business sense at a time and geek cred to the bar," said Chris Sacca, a venture capitalist, who has worked with Ms. Mayer at Google. "It is hard work / play hard, and product engineering-oriented culture, and Yahoo has been missing for years."
But it comes to employment with little experience at a level across the enterprise, which could be problematic because it defines a strategic vision.
"I would be more excited about it," said Shar Van Boskirk, an analyst at Forrester Research. "Yahoo has too many products. I fear that the challenge is that by putting someone in the product first CEO role they will not have someone who has the ability to create a clear and unified vision and strategy for the brand Yahoo. "Ms. Mayer also joins a company that has faced significant upheaval on the management of the last decade that Yahoo has tried unsuccessfully to return to its original glory days. His predecessors had little chance of revitalization of the old Internet pioneer.
In May, Yahoo Chief Executive newest, Scott Thompson, resigned after questions emerged about whether he lied about certain university degrees, he had been at work for only four months. Board of directors of Yahoo has also been reconstituted by adding three new members, including activist investor Daniel Loeb, Third and Michael Wolf, the long-time consultant and former media chief operating officer of MTV Networks Viacom.
For the past few weeks, a half-dozen names had been bandied about to take the top job. But the name of Ms. Mayer was never mentioned. Most analysts said they believed that the board of Yahoo was planning to promote Ross Levinsohn, former head of the media company in the world who had taken over as interim leader after Mr. Thompson left .

"In recent years, given the turnover, there was a lack of attention to user experience," David Filo, co-founder of Yahoo, who still works at the company, said in an interview Monday. "We must go back to basics." He said he was very excited that Ms. Mayer has agreed to join the company. "It will be a surprise to many people."
